Cannon Beach
Sandcastle Contest

Fun for the whole family

It's hard to tell whether the participants or the spectators enjoy this event more. It all begins just after the early morning high tide, and ends as the next high tide reclaims the beach. The date and times vary from year to year.

Anyone can participate. The emphasis is on fun. Contestants pre-register online as individuals or as teams by age group and are judged not only on the finished product, but also on enthusiasm and teamwork.

The rules are simple. Contestants must stay within their designated plot (20'x 20' for adults). No sand may be added or removed from the plot. Only materials natural to the beach may be used in the finished sculpture. Plots and judging are organized into divisions by age, individual or team, and building instruments, such as forms, used.

Make your lodging reservations now and plan to be on the beach early to join in the excitement. Times vary from year to year depending upon the tides. Volunteers are always welcome.

2014 Weekend Report
My oh my! We had a beautiful day for the 50th Anniversary of our Sandcastle Contest. The crowd was big - bigger than it has been for many years - maybe as big as ever - roughly estimated at 10,000+. Friday from 5-7pm was the Buckets & Shovels Dinner with former Blazer Jerome Kersey at the Chamber. About 125 dinners were served at $10 for Spaghetti, Chowder and Salad. The dinner was by Cranky Sue and featured a slideshow of past Sandcastle Contests and Posters presented by George Vetter. A parade followed the dinner - an old tradition reborn. Saturday morning at 11am the sculptors began on the beach with judging around 4pm. Cars were backed up on Highway 101 for 4 miles or more at one point. At 1245pm 500 cars were parked on the beach. By 345pm there were 630. Cars had to be off the beach by 5pm as the tide rolled in. There were 50 Sandcastle plots with a record 8 Master plots. A Master Plot is a team that has won at previous or other competitions. Saturday evening's concert at the Chamber Community Hall featuring local talent was a near sellout. Paul Dueber & friends performed what Paul called a "Song Circle". Admission was $5 with kids 12 & under free. On Saturday evening at 8pm was the Bonfire with smores on the beach at the Tolovana Wayside. Then Sunday morning at 9am was the Fun Run (5K Run or Walk) downtown at the foot of Second Street. Sixty-five people participated. Links to George Vetter's photos from the weekend are above. Find the date of the next event at and make your lodging reservations now.
